Why you are sore two days after EMS, and why that is the point

Gerard in the EMS suit, mid press-up

New clients often message me on the second morning: “I am sore in places I have never been sore before. Is that normal?” It is normal, and it is good news.

What a session actually does

EMS makes your muscles contract up to 85 times a second while you move. That reaches deep fibres that a normal workout leaves alone, and it puts them under the same healthy stress as a hard strength session. Tiny amounts of muscle tissue are broken down. That is what training is.

What happens next

The building happens afterwards, not during. Over the next 48 hours your body sends proteins to repair those fibres and lays them down a little thicker and stronger than before. The soreness you feel is that repair work in progress.

This is why we train once a week and why I will not book you two days running, even if you ask. Train again before the rebuild is finished and you interrupt it. The rest is not time off from training. The rest is the training.

How to make the most of the 48 hours

  • Drink more water than usual for the rest of the day.
  • Eat some protein at your next two meals. Your body needs the raw material.
  • Keep moving gently: a walk, the stairs, a swim. Sitting still makes it stiffer.
  • A red light session on the day after helps many of our members feel fresher.

By the third or fourth week the soreness eases off as your body gets used to the work. That is when the intensity goes up.

Your first session is free, and it is only 12 minutes. Book it on WhatsApp or call 086 810 6213.
